German Firm Wins Business Award for Re-Sealable Can Lid

Munich-based Can2Close was founded in 2012 by Andreas Kleiner, Robert Kruetten and Moritz von Grotthuss. It said that its 'c2' resealable end is a new mechanism that replaces the standard stay-on tab opening of beverage cans with a simple mechanism that is "easier to open and can be repeatedly sealed". The firm was recognised with an award at the Munich Business Plan Competition 2013 for its product.

Re-sealable closures are traditionally present on packs such as plastic bottles but not on cans.

The Munich Business Plan Competition was hosted by Evobis, an organisation with close ties to German businesses that supports and awards innovative business ideas of start-up companies. Jurors selected can2close as one of 10 winners out of 169 submissions.

Advantages

Can2Close said that its new invention can help to consumer to easily transport cans after the first opening. The firm said that its re-sealable end also keeps drinks fresher, prohibits unwarranted contaminants, such as drugs and wasps, and reduces the risk of spilling.

In a statement, the firm said: "Since the 60s, many inventors have attempted to solve the riddle of the re-sealable can, but even the most-promising solutions were too technically complex or not economically viable to integrate into the internationally-standardised filling processes.

"The last significant change to the soda can, in fact, was the stay-on tab, launched in 1974. It replaced the ring-pull and reduced litter and the risk of injury. Now, some 40 years later, there is a solution that further evolves the can and meets the needs of today's market."

Standard cans

On the company's website it states that standard cans are made from four pieces: the body, the lid, an elastomeric seal that fits between the body and the lid and a stay-on tab. The can2close invention modifies a standard lid and replaces the stay-on tab with a proprietary assembly that allows for easier opening, a better drinking experience and repeated sealing, according to the firm.

Speaking about the award, Can2Close chief executive Andreas Kleiner said: "This award, in combination with the excellent feedback we have received from leading beverage manufacturers, confirms that we have found a major business opportunity with a product that will evolve an industry."
